Little Hamlet

Surprise!  You have made it to Little Hamlet.  Now that wasn't so hard was it?  Well maybe the water hookup :D.

You easily know you have arrived because you see this screen.

So let's see what we have earned as a new major.

Note that the population needed to reach milestones vary depending on the maps.

  • We will now get taxes from our citizens. We can take out a loan if needed (hopefully not).

  • Those citizens create garbage even if they compost, so garbage pick up will be needed. We will need to add a landfill for sure.    (The Recycling Center is part of Green Cities).

  • The younger kids shouldn't be riding the bus to the next town, your guys need an elementary school. (The community school alternative is part of the Green Cities pack).

  • An since folks will have accidents and get sick we will need a medical clinic.

Here is a screenshot of the city at 444 population:

I added the elementary school in a spot that would have maximum influence (happiness for the masses). Now all the residential on the right are happy.

You can see the happiness of your Cims by clicking on the smilely face in the left top sidebar.

As you enlarge your city you will need more streets. While it is optimal to think ahead, sometimes that fails. Here I knew that the residential section needed to be larger. I wanted to take advantage of the riverfront.  So making a road to the East was called for.   The house in red will disappear but -- if your city is a happy city -- will be replaced almost instantaneously with another somewhat smaller structure.

As you enlarge your city you can choose (or not) to maximize the usable housing area. By watching the grid lines you can see how many and where the zoning squares will end up.

If you can fill an area with only a few intersections -- that is wonderful. A preponderance of crossroads slows down traffic.

Things that can go wrong!

It is always good to check the left sidebar often and see how water, power and other services are doing. But sometime we ("I" ) get involved in the creative process and forget.  Here are some things to look out for as you tiny town grows up.

If anything goes wrong in your city for a prolonged period of time, houses will be abandoned.  Best scenario is to bulldoze the abandoned house to make way for newness.  If you do not they will be demolished eventually (sometimes very quickly) by someone who wants to rebuild on the land.

When you see an icon of someone that looks sick, it is time to add a clinic. Try to place it in an area where it will serve the most people in your city.

It won't be long before you area has been deemed a Worthy Village!

By the way, if you want to speed things up there are arrow keys next to the Play Pause area (on the right) that let you speed up time. I almost always run at the fastest setting, but pick your preferred speed.
